Alcudia (Alcúdia) is a municipality of Balearic Islands, situated in Mallorca Island. The municipality of Alcudia is a particularly attractive tourist destination for families, nature-lovers and sports and culture fans. Its geographic location provides a unique diversity of landscapes: fine sand beaches, coves, mountains and wetlands rich in Mediterranean flora and fauna. Currently, 35% of its territory is a Special Interest Nature Area. Highlights of its nature areas are the "S´Albufereta" nature reserve, which is very important ecologically because of the number of species that live there, the Victoria Mountain, Es Cap des Pinar and much of the coastline.
Alcudia has always been highly aware of the privilege of having an important ecological heritage. In fact, 1992, the City Hall became an innovator on the Balearic Islands by declaring Alcudia an ecotourist community. This declaration expressed its will to involve all the municipal agencies in bringing about awareness of respect and protection for the environment in all its areas of action.
Thr city hall focused its policies of Sustainability by implementing several measures: adapting secondary rules to the legislation in force, carrying out environmental information and education campaigns, fostering the use of public transport and non-contaminating vehicles, improving the aesthetics and urban landscape, requiring environmental impacts studies for all building projects, reducing energy consumption, water saving and reuse, creation of a comprehensive beach management plan and the start-up of the Alcudia Local Agenda 21, to name a few.
In 1994, the Ecotourism Label was created, to be granted in recognition of tourism companies that adopt environmentally-friendly conduct, as governed by regulations and after passing an audit.
The practices of these establishments mainly consist of waste reductions and selective pick-ups, electrical and water consumption efficiency, use of organic products, respect for cultural and linguistic media, promoting the use of local products and creation of regional menus. Currently, 25% of the accomodations establishments hold this environmental quality seal. After starting with the hotel sector, the seal was expanded to the restaurant and marina sectors, and will also be expanded to other business areas.
This philosophy, its applications and the commitment of all the participants has enbled Alcudia to succesfully combine the preservation of the environment, its culture and customs with tourism evolution and developement, which is essential for enabling residents and visitors to continue enjoying all the wonders the city has to offer.
Besides receiving numerous national and international awards and recognition, the efforts made have established Alcúdia as one of the favourite destinations on the Balearic Islands.
